About Us

The Kovil existed in the past 150 years back and was situated on Bel Air Sugar Estate (Allee Coco) in sugar cane fields. In 2002, upon the request of the Bel Air Sugar Estate when the latter relocated its “Camp Sucrier”, the Kovil had to be moved. So , the Murthys (Ganesha, Muruga, Siva, Amen and Rama) had to be removed and transferred to this actual place in Morcellement, Riviere Des Anguilles.

Commonly known as Shiva Vishnu Alayam, the complete name of the association is Shri Maha Vishnu Narayana Murthi Tamil Temple Society.

2004, we planned it as a shiva temple only but since the temple existed with lord Rama as Vaishnava. It became a shiva and Vishnu temple which is now following the main principle of Saivam, where Saivaite and Shiva Prayers, are being practiced.

2008, Indian sculptors from India started to construct the temple. The Kovil’s architecture was inspired from various kovils in Tamil Nadu. Every sculpture in the temple took about six years to be completed and the remaining construction work took another four years. The kovil was finally completed in 2018 with the MahaKumbavishegam which was held on 01.07.18 as a culmination of all efforts made over the years.

Besides the prayers and rituals, the prayers and rituals, we are also focusing on meditation/awakening of inner self. Therefore for this purpose, a “Goopha” has been constructed. It is in fact a cave which is in a sense unique as it doesn’t exist in any temple around Mauritius so far.
